Thank you everyone who showed up for the Caledonia's Daughters launch. We have received great feedback on the anthology of short-short stories focused on Afro-futuristic sci-fi women written by Staajabu. Check out Amazon, Barnes and Nobles.com and Kindle to get your copy. It was great seeing Mama C. as part of her heal the world tour and sharing the mic with her in an official capacity at Gold Lion Arts. We had big fun. Thanks to all who came out in support of that and all of our March events. Ya'll keep us going!
Be at GOS Art Gallery 1825 Del Paso Blvd., Sacramento, Saturday, March 11, 2017 from 3-5 p.m. Admission is FREE and It's going to be a blast!
March 10 we will be at Gold Lion Arts, 2733 Riverside Blvd., Sacramento, Friday March 10, 7:30 p.m. as we welcome Mama C back to Sacramento on her current heal the world tour to benefit children in Tanzania. You really don't want to miss these events!! $12 Charlotte Hill O’Neal aka Mama C is an internationally known visual artist, musician, performance artist and poet of more than three decades of experience. She was born in Kansas City, KS in 1951 and has lived in Tanzania, east Africa, with her husband Pete O’Neal, former Chairman of the Kansas City Chapter Black Panther Party and founder of United African Alliance Community Center UAACC and the Leaders of Tomorrow Children’s Home, since 1972. She is a mother of two children and Co-Founder and Director of UAACC located outside of Arusha, Tanzania. Mama C is one of the very few women in the world who plays nyatiti and obokano, African traditional eight string lyres that originate in Kenya. She enjoys accompanying herself at times while reciting her poetry and storytelling in the manner of the ancient griots of Africa. She is currently exploring the art of playing kamale ngoni, a 12 string African traditional harp that originates in Mali. Whew! Giving thanks and praises to the Most High, we are here... we made it. Happy 2017 family! Our loved ones who transitioned would surely want us to celebrate their essence and remembrance, as well as all that we have to look forward to as we embark on a new year. In January, we reflect on all that it took to get us here and we make plans for our future. We hope to see you at one of our upcoming features and/or events. Peace and blessings!
When we are not poeting, Straight Out Scribes is working on other projects, spending time with family, decompressing, teaching, hosting workshops or when we are really blessed, writing! We were really busy in October, November and December, and are just about finished recharging. We hope your holidays were fantastic and that you are moving into 2017 with flair, or at least fluidity. Peace fam and fans!
Straight Out Scribes participated in Compassionate Action's event to honor prisoners of war and missing in action service members on their day of recognition. The event was held in Oak Park and we were happy to contribute to the worthy cause.
In August 2016, SOS featured for the Sacramento Poetry Center's benefit reading at Wellsprings to support women and the arts. An awesome audience made us feel truly special and appreciated.
