Whew! Giving thanks and praises to the Most High, we are here... we made it. Happy 2017 family! Our loved ones who transitioned would surely want us to celebrate their essence and remembrance, as well as all that we have to look forward to as we embark on a new year. In January, we reflect on all that it took to get us here and we make plans for our future. We hope to see you at one of our upcoming features and/or events. Peace and blessings!

When we are not poeting, Straight Out Scribes is working on other projects, spending time with family, decompressing, teaching, hosting workshops or when we are really blessed, writing! We were really busy in October, November and December, and are just about finished recharging. We hope your holidays were fantastic and that you are moving into 2017 with flair, or at least fluidity. Peace fam and fans!
Straight Out Scribes participated in Compassionate Action's event to honor prisoners of war and missing in action service members on their day of recognition. The event was held in Oak Park and we were happy to contribute to the worthy cause.
In August 2016, SOS featured for the Sacramento Poetry Center's benefit reading at Wellsprings to support women and the arts. An awesome audience made us feel truly special and appreciated.
Thank yous were in order as we completed the third Crocker Block by Block block party hosting the poetry stage. This final one was in Oak Park in July 2016 and it was great fun. Here's my gushing after the event:
Thanks to everyone who came out to support the poets at the Crocker Block by Block block party in Oak Park on Saturday. It was an amazing day. Thank you again NSAA the Black Root for starting us off on the right track. Thanks to all of the other features, Sheba Haven Richard Jackson Anna Marie Art Thomas JoAnn Anglin Joey Garcia Angela Mayes and Allahiya Shabazz. Ya'll rocked the block and I love that you had my back, held me up and represented for the art of poetry with the Crocker! Thanks also to Akosua Boateng... she blew it up! So glad to have met you. Genelle also fed us some of her great words. Thank you to Stacey Shelnut-Hendrick for giving me the reigns and the means to invite and host all of you, to Dea Montelongo and Daphne Burgess, and the rest of the staff for all of your hard work in pulling off such a jam packed vortex of talent at the three block parties... whew weee! And to those who wanted to be there but were unable to for various reasons, we wish you well Frank Dixon Graham Steven Clark Terrance Taylor. Special thanks goes to Staajabu Staajabu my momma and partner in poetry and beyond for all you do to assist and support my efforts, hold up the Scribes family and extended family, your many many contributions to the community at home and at large, and to all those who shared on the open mic, a great big THANK YOU. I know some of you don't poet often and for some it was their first time on the mic. Ya'll missed Temperance Bonner's haiku in Japanese and then translated into English. It was beautiful! The participation of E-legal TagTeam with (Coon The Poet and TroubleSin) was epic! And having Milton Bowens in the proverbial house is always a treat. Thanks for that most excellent poem you shared to close out our "stage". Peace family!
